About
One inland service area, two generations of built-in refrigeration
Rancho Bernardo is part of the city of San Diego rather than a town of its own — the inland stretch along I-15 where San Diego County stops being coastal — and this is a business that works there and not much further. The round is short on purpose: the original streets of Westwood, The Trails, Eastview, Bernardo Heights and Seven Oaks, north to 4S Ranch, then across to Carmel Mountain Ranch, Sabre Springs and Mira Mesa. Built-in refrigeration is most of what we are called out for, in every form these kitchens hold it, and the range, the cooktop, the dishwasher and the wine cabinet get looked at on the same visit rather than booked as a second one.
What makes this service area different from the coastal towns is not the weather. It is that the kitchens here were built decades apart and stand within a few miles of each other. The original streets around Seven Oaks and The Trails still hold built-ins that have been running quietly for a very long time, and those units are discrete parts — a heater, a thermistor, a fan, a switch — each of which can be tested with a meter and none of which will tell you anything on a display. Ten minutes north in 4S Ranch it is current columns and integrated panels, where the control keeps a fault history and the first useful move is to read it before touching a screw. Same complaint, two different opening moves, two different sets of parts on the van.
The other thing this area does that the coast does not is retrofit. A great many kitchens here have been remodeled inside cabinetry framed for an earlier generation of appliance. A modern column goes into an opening it does not quite fit, filler strips and a trim piece close the gap, and the grille the condenser breathes through ends up passing a fraction of the air it was designed for. Nothing about that registers as a fault. The unit simply runs with no margin for years, and the first symptom is an afternoon it cannot keep up with. We measure the opening and the real clearance before saying a word about the sealed system, because on a retrofitted install the restriction is as often the carpentry as the coil.
